Ray Florets - Disk Florets

The disk florets comprise the dark, circular center of the sunflower. Unlike the sterile ray florets, these are fertile flowers responsible for reproduction. Hundreds of tiny, tubular florets are packed in a precise spiral pattern based on the Golden Angle, maximizing seed density. Each floret is actinomorphic (radially symmetrical) and contains both male and female reproductive organs. They bloom sequentially from the outer edge toward the center, offering nectar and pollen to visiting insects. Once pollinated, each individual disk floret develops into a single sunflower seed, maturing as the plant’s outer "petals" begin to wither.
