Leaf Blades - Leaf Veins

The veins house the plant's vascular tissue: the xylem, which transports water and minerals up from the roots, and the phloem, which carries the energy-rich sugars produced during photosynthesis back to the rest of the sunflower. Additionally, the pressure of the fluid within these veins (turgor pressure) provides the mechanical strength necessary for the leaf to remain expanded and maximize its exposure to the sun.
